You bring the fur, I’ll bring the sugar

by CHRISTINE SY

Meeting at the trading post
You bring the fur
I’ll bring the sugar
And we’ll mix n’ mingle
Till the neighbours go home

What they don’t know up ahead there
Is that I made your snowshoes, hon
And gummied up the canoe
So you could get the pelts
And they could do their thing
All fancy shmancy in those beautiful hats
They make, wear, parade across the big water

What they don’t know
Is that you got the wood, hon
and built up that fire, burned all night
Helped me to turn that tree gift
ziisabaakode nibi

Into something sweet,
Liquid good life
Another kind of shkode nibi
