Matrix Presents Issue 83: Les enfants du terrible
Matrix magazine is now accepting submissions for its dossier on terror and
the terrifying. Terror is at the heart of the Kantian sublime, repressive politics in recent and bygone history, the psychological uses of the beastly in fairy tales, drama ˆ la Romanticists, and the inspiration for what Frank Lentricchia and Jody McAuliffe called "Crimes of Art and Terror." In the face of terror we've fallen in love, banned books, gone mad, or gotten used to it.
What, today, are the uses of terror? Special to this issue, we will be accepting a wide range of literary and visual art genres. Find us 50-word excerpts from the most startling texts published over 100 years ago that discuss the phenomenon of terror. Give us a postcard essay -- creative non-fiction of no longer than 250 words on the terrible and the terrifying. Submit short stories of no longer than 3500 words, poems (no more than 3-5), images of any sort at all. Tell us about ghosts, nightmares, and anything that's given you the chills. What could be worse than being terrified? Perhaps not being terrified at all?
Deadline: April 1, 2009
